Kitchen
Hob won’t light
-
Note: The big central burner doesn’t currently work!
-
If one of the hob rings is spluttering and won’t light it might be because the burner isn’t sitting in its holder properly.
-
There’s a safety valve [photo 22] under the sink, on the left. Try turning it off and on again.
-
Check the gas cylinder in the barn. There are two cylinders connected which you can switch between using the control on the wall [photo 23].
-
Full cylinders can be purchased at the Leroy Merlin petrol station. Take an empty cylinder to exchange. Note that the cylinder valve attachments are reverse threaded, so turn clockwise to unscrew.
Oven not working
-
If the oven clock is flashing
0:00it won’t operate. Press the Clock button to stop it flashing. -
Otherwise the breaker may have tripped, or there may be a powercut.
Dishwasher not working
- If there’s a flashing light next to the brush symbol [photo 21] the dishwasher is struggling to drain:
- Remove the filter from the bottom of the dishwasher and clean it
- Remove any bits of food in the bottom of the dishwasher
- Pour in a kettle full of hot water to break up any lingering waste
- Hold the power button to reset and try again
Electrics
No electricity / powercut
-
Note: During a powercut don’t flush the downstairs toilet as the pump will be off and could overflow!
-
Check the breaker switches in the kitchen larder cupboard - one of them may have tripped. They should all be in the up position [photo 24].
-
Check if the Linky Smart Meter [photo 25] in the kitchen larder cupboard has power. If it does then it may have overloaded. This happened in May 2024 and Bruno from down the road came up and pressed some buttons which displayed an error message on the Linky. He fiddled with the buttons some more until the power suddenly came back on, which may or may not have been due to his fiddling. Feel free to press buttons on the Smart Meter!
-
If the Smart Meter doesn’t appear to have any power then it may be a regular powercut. If it goes on for a while try asking the neighbours if they have also lost power.
-
You could try calling the electrician.

Internet not working
-
Note: The internet is mostly stable but it does occasionally drop for short periods
-
Check the router on the desk in the hall which might be displaying a message saying it has no connection.
-
If the router is off check one of the power breakers hasn’t tripped.
-
If you’re in another part of the house check that you’re connected to one of the wifi extenders.
-
If you’re connected but still have no internet the extender may need resetting. Try unplugging and plugging it back in.
-
If you’re too far from an extender you can move the one from the games room or the living room.
Light not working
-
Note: The dimmer switches in the dining room & landing have a short delay before the light comes on.
-
If a bulb has blown there are some sparesin the cupboard under the stairs.
-
If you can’t find the right bulb please let me know and I’ll bring one over!
-
If it’s a plug-in lamp try it on a different socket as sometimes the extension cords just die.
